I've been wrestling with this too, especially in attempts to use the summer to research and write some book chapters. Problem is, most of my books are eBooks or PDFs, so I need a machine to read them, and I'm writing on the machine as well.

But I can spend hours not exactly off-task, but tangential to it, getting distracted, as you say: checking email, Google Reader mostly.

So my fix has been to install a menu bar countdown timer, set it for two hours, and if I get distracted, pause it until I get back on task. By the end of the day I have to finish that two hours of my primary work.

It helps on better days. On other days, life can get in the way.

I like your idea of a lock, and the links remover is great to know about. Thanks for that.

    Be well.
  • Hi Clay: Yeah, "tangential" is a good way to put it. It's not always wasted time and it can be productive. It's amazing how many interesting things I've stumbled upon during this time. Serendipity is important, I think, when trying to find material that's "out there", and therefore interesting.
I like your approach to tracking your on task behavior. Just having that kind of info. can be extremely useful. I know it works wonders helping people lower their energy consumption when they can see how much they are using.
    Cheers
